Review and Giveaway: The Fitzy Resolution

The Fitzy Resolution isn’t just your standard dog story — it’s not even a standard dog story told from a dog’s-eye view. Is it a social satire lampooning representative government? Is it a flight of fancy that assigns human politics to a group of dogs a la Animal Farm? Is it a mystery/political thriller built on a new and imaginative framework? What exactly do dogs do and think in the company of other dogs, and in the complete absence of humans? You’ll have to read the book to decide for yourself.

Review and Giveaway: LeLePets.com

I admit it. I’m hopelessly addicted to Fab.com, my favorite online yard sale-boutique-art gallery. If you’re not familiar with Fab, it’s basically a collection of week-long sales of stuff you don’t find just any old place. It combines fine art with found art with handcrafts with shined-up finds from someone’s grandma’s attic. If you’re a Pinterest user, you don’t have to look very far to find a Fab item on someone’s pinboard.

We Have a Winnah!!

Congratulations to Tom, Kathy, and Nikki Defino from Pennsylvania for being the lucky winnahs of the Earth Heart Buzz Guard giveaway! Apparently the mosquitoes in western PA can get pretty savage, too. We’re hoping that the Buzz Guard helps keep those little monsters away from Nikki!

Now, don’t forget that the BOGO (Buy One, Get One Free) promotion continues until September 30, 2012. If you didn’t enter the giveaway and you still want to get rid of those pesky bugs, just order 2 bottles of Buzz Guard from the Earth Heart website. Use the promotion code SHAGGYBUZZ at checkout, and poof! As if by magic, you’ll get that second bottle free!

What? You didn’t win? Don’t feel too bad. We have some fantastic stuff coming up… including the winner of the “What Should We Review Next?” poll!

Review and Giveaway: Arenus Steadfast Canine Supplements

Keeping your dog’s joints healthy is a lifetime project — even a before-lifetime project. Genetics plays some part, but so do environment, lifestyle, and to some degree, nutrition. It never hurts to get a jump-start on maintaining your dog’s joint health while your dog is young. Someday your dog will be older, and healthy joints can really affect an old dog’s quality of life.

Charlie Brown is past 15 now — his birthday was in May — and except for the occasional pain in his shoulder from having had Lyme as a youngster, he gets around pretty well. I usually start giving my dogs joint-health supplements when they reach age 7 or 8. I can’t claim that doing so has kept my old dogs on their feet longer, but he rarely needs pain pills for his arthritic shoulder. Pain pills take a real toll on older dogs’ systems, especially the liver and kidneys. If you could help your dog forestall some of the infirmities of old age, even for a while… wouldn’t you?

Review and Giveaway: Buzz Guard Spray from Earth Heart

Here in Maine, the mosquito is often referred to as the State Bird. We don’t have the low-flying-aircraft-style skeeters that they have in NJ, but we do have an abundance of the nasty, quick, tiny ones that reallllly make their presence known when they swoop in and bite you. We’ve had a Mosquito Magnet for years, and some years it’s the only reason we can use our backyard in summer. For times when we’re away from the house, we’ve become connoisseurs of bug repellents for both humans and canines.

We’ve been fairly lucky bug-wise this season, thanks to the weird weather. The very dry weather in early spring helped eliminate some of the places where the nasty little buggers breed, and the heavy rains that followed probably washed away what was left. (Mosquito larvae can still stubbornly survive through drought conditions, even if you haven’t had a lot of rain locally — so there’s probably always a reason to worry about the spread of West Nile virus.) Now that we’re experiencing more normal weather in late July, though, the little bastards are coming back.

Infographic: Choosing the Right Dog Food

Let’s face it: choosing the right dog food is a complex issue. There are many factors to consider, from your dog’s needs and your abilities and budget to the ingredients in all of the various formulas. It doesn’t help that there’s an expert on every corner, and every one of them stridently disagrees with all of the other ones. At the end of the day, the best you can do is to become well-informed and to make the best choice you can for your dog.

Our friends at Pet365 have done their best to distill a complex subject into one graphic. There’s so much more information out there, but it never hurts to start thinking about the best way to feed your dog. I don’t exactly agree with the part about “dogs should never eat raw meat or raw fish”, but this graphic does contain plenty of interesting and useful information. (As a side note, Procter & Gamble also now owns Natura Pet Products, makers of Innova and California Natural pet foods.) Anyway, enjoy!

Review and Giveaway: Wild Meadow Farms Pure Meat Minis

You might remember when we did a review and giveaway of Wild Meadow Farms’ original beef bites. The company has since expanded its offerings to include cage-free, applewood-smoked chicken in addition to the original grass-fed beef treats — plus it has changed its processes so that the treats no longer require refrigeration. Each package does come with a “use-by” date so you can still be sure your dog is getting the freshest possible treats.
