We Have Winnahs!
Sorry for the delay in announcing the lucky winnahs for our last giveaway. You probably thought I went to Westminster, but I was whooping it up in New Orleans at the annual Krewe of Barkus parade. (More to follow, including pictures!)
Anyway… remember our wonderful gift basket giveaway from Mutt Nose Best?
Our original winnah never responded, so we held a second random drawing. Congrats to Kathy Kiley — who is already a devoted fan of Mutt Nose Best products — for being our second randomly-drawn winnah! Kathy got back in touch in record time, so she’ll be enjoying the gift basket in no time!
Congrats also to Sheila Schimpf and Judi Steele for winning copies of David Frei’s Angel on a Leash! I was going to give away just one copy, but Judi’s comment about her Finnish Lapphund Denali was so compelling that I’m sending her my copy. Animal-assisted therapy is great work, and I wish had a copy of David Frei’s book for everyone who has ever expressed an interest.
All the packages will be going out in the mail this week, and I promise not to run away to warmer climes again until they’ve been mailed!
We Have a Winnah!
Congratulations to Christa McChancy for winning the free copy of the Dog Cancer Survival Guide! Christa’s comment was chosen at random by comment number, using a number-picking script.
Are you bummed that you didn’t win this time? Don’t despair. We have more books coming soon!
We have a Winnah!
Congratulations to Kelly Ann Thuet and Murphy for being the lucky winnahs of the $25 Mr. Chewy shopping spree! Kelly Ann indicated that she’d buy some Taste of the Wild dog food with her bounty, and now she can go indulge in some mercantile therapy on Murphy’s behalf!
It wasn’t until I saw her Facebook page that I realized that Murphy was a Malamute. I’ve always had a soft spot for those dogs, especially Dinah’s obedience classmate Oonah. (Oonah talks. I can’t get enough of it!)
I wish I had enough Mr. Chewy promos to hand one out to everybody… but there are loads of Mr. Chewy giveaways going on all over the place. Try poshonabudget.com and lisablogs, for starters.
Didn’t Win This Time? Don’t Despair!
The giveaway for the Dog Cancer Survival Guide ends tomorrow, January 23. We also have some really wonderful local products for our next giveaway and some really great books in the queue — plus some other great stuff. Come on back and enter!
We Have a Winnah!
(And it wasn’t a fix!)
Congratulations to Valarie Maloney from far-off Scarborough, ME! Our automated winnah-picking program picked her from among the respondents to be the lucky recipient of a packaged of Wild Meadow Farms Beef Bites! Now we’ll really get to see whether any dog can resist the glorious beefy temptation that beckoned to my dogs and promised them all sorts of deliciousness.
I took the last handful of our trial package to Badger’s Nosework class last week. Badger has always had the kind of nose that could locate a single kibble in a warehouse full of stuff. He’s done well in Nosework, but after I used the Wild Meadow Farms goodies for food pairings, his skill level increased by a factor of at least a zillion. Talk about motivation!
Curious what your dog would do for a handcrafted, nothing-but-beef treat? Head on over to Wild Meadow Farms and find out!
Oh, By the Way…
Val is the owner and chief creative force behind Showstopper K-9 Gifts, a Maine-based business featuring hand-painted images of any breed of dog on jewelry, trophies, clothing, glasses and dishes… you name it. She even does custom work, and can paint an image of your dog from a photo onto practically anything.
Anyway, Val is offering a giveaway of her own on her Showstopper Facebook page! The beautiful Valentine Beardies shown above are just a sampling from her Valentine collection. She can make a Valentine featuring your dog — any breed, any color.

To participate in Val’s giveaway, go Like her page on Facebook and follow her own Wicked Simple Rules. The contest ends on January 25, so you’d better get hopping!
Angry Birds, Happy Winnahs!
Congratulations to Kelly Ann Thuet, Laura Jacobson and Murphy, Amy Orvin and her crew, and Yvonne Mulcaster and the beardies3 for being our latest winnahs in the Hartz Angry Birds toy giveaway! All of the Angry Birds will be winging their way toward the lucky doggies this week.
Didn’t win this time? Not to worry. I have some really great stuff coming up in the review queue!
We Have Anothah Winnah!
Congrats to Tracy Hill and Atom and Gusto for being the lucky winnahs of the Kyjen Ginormous Gator toy! Our random number picker selected Tracy’s entry. The toy will ship direct from the Kyjen toy workshop in Colorado.
If you didn’t win the Ginormous Gator, don’t despair. You still have a few days to get in on the Hartz Angry Birds toy drawing!

Another Winnah and a Shout-Out!
Congrats to Julie Chalpan, author of Titan’s Tales, for being the winnah of the copy of Awkward Family Pet Photos!
Congrats also to Laura Tappero for winning the copy of Following Atticus. The original winnah never responded, so we held a second random drawing and Laura won.
Didn’t win this time? Don’t worry. Wait till you see all of the dog toys and other great stuff we’re giving away in upcoming posts!
Big Shout-Out!
Today I received the nicest card in the mail for the holidays…
…and it came with hand-written thanks from the folks at Mr. Chewy! This might be a first. Thanks, guys!
Listen Up… It’s really important to note that Mr. Chewy does listen when customers and reviewers speak. You might remember from my review that I liked everything about the company — prices, selection, speed, and customer service — but that I couldn’t support them further because of their support for the Humane Society of the United States. I recommended that Mr. Chewy find organizations that actually help animals instead of just themselves, and they did! They even picked Bide-a-Wee, which is an actual animal shelter! If you’re in the NY/NJ/CT tri-state area, you can actually go down to Wantagh and look into the eyes of the animals those donations are helping. Well done, Mr. Chewy!
We Have Our Winnahs!
Congratulations to Mary Musgrave for winning the copy of Following Atticus by Tom Ryan, and congrats to Dianna Anderson for winning the gift basket of EO Pet Care Products!
Oh, and remember the Puppies vs. Babies contest? Well, voting closed over there today. I had three small prizes to give away, so Molly McNamara from Bounce Bark Run/Muppets on Parade and Sarah from Married With Dawgs have won two of them. They are bars of all-natural, locally-made dog shampoo made of goat’s milk and tea tree oil. The soap is gentle enough for a St. Bernard puppy’s coat, but you’d have to whip up some mighty suds to use it on a Beardie!
We have a whole new giveaway going on: the copy of Awkward Family Pet Photos. We also have a bunch of other stuff — including some great dog toys — in the queue, so be sure to come back and enter again!
Review: Nature’s Variety Homestyle Canned Foods
I stumbled onto the Nature’s Variety Homestyle canned foods quite by accident. Charlie and I happened to be early for a vet appointment, so I stopped by a local boutique pet supply store nearby and found some Homestyle cans on their shelves. Of course I knew this formula existed online, but the local shop where I buy my Prairie kibble and Instinct raw doesn’t carry everything. Since these were the days following Charlie’s bout with vestibular disease. He needed plenty of palatable, easy-to-eat food in order to put some weight back on his old bones, I was tickled to find another Nature’s Variety formula that we could add to his diet, in whatever quantity he’d eat.
None of the Gang of Four are exactly picky eaters, so I’m not exactly giving away the punchline by mentioning that he loved it. With its chunks of meat and vegetables, it looked better to me than your standard can of Dinty Moore.
You already know how this story turns out: the Gang of Four loves this stuff, old Chuckles is beginning to put some weight back on, and this formula fits in perfectly with the rest of our rotation diet. And they lived happily ever after.
But That’s Not All!
Since we’re already on the subject of Nature’s Variety here, I just wanted to give a big shout-out and many thanks to Nature’s Variety (and especially to Kelly) for their kind and generous donation of samples of various kibble formulas for the Bearded Collie Club of America’s 2011 National Specialty. We were able to stuff the exhibitors’ welcome bags with L.I.D. (Limited Ingredient Diet) samples, and we had the salmon and chicken formulas at the hospitality table. People loved them — all of them were snapped right up! I hope this results in more devoted fans for the company; in any case, thanks to them for their generosity.
